Citation Employment Law - The Growing statistics....

Employment Tribunals on the Up

On 6th July 2010, the Tribunals Service published alarming figures showing a sharp increase in the number of employment tribunal cases brought against employers.

Over the past year, employment tribunal cases have grown from 151,000 to 236,100, a staggering 56% rise, the highest ever. As such, the cost to UK businesses is increasing. These figures clearly demonstrate the growing importance for employers to ensure they protect themselves from this costly threat.

Andrea O’Hare, Head of Personnel & Employment Law at Citation commented “Citation work to keep clients out of employment tribunal. By providing employers with staff handbooks, contracts of employment, legal updates and expert 24/7 advice though Helpline advisors, Citation clients reduce the chance of finding themselves in a tribunal.  Should a client of Citation have an employment tribunal case lodged against them, Citation’s highly skilled Advocates will guide them through the employment law maze’”

The highest number of tribunal claims lodged was for working time breaches (including holiday entitlement), followed by unauthorised deductions from pay and unfair dismissal. Business owners should understand how to deal with these employment issues correctly whilst running their business, at times a balancing act in itself.

With the UK economy in recovery and sustainability being questioned, business owners need to ensure they have the correct systems, procedures and advice in place to protect their business and future from unwanted, costly and time consuming employment tribunals.
